How to quickly show up on Google

The other day I posted something on this blog and sent Ryan an email message about it. A short time later, I received an alert from Google (I have signed up to be notified whenever my name shows up on the web somewhere) saying that Ryan’s blog had a new mention of my name. When I visited his blog (http://www.ryannagy.com), I discovered he had just posted the new information he had read only a few hours before. I wrote him an email and told him how surprised I was it had shown up so quickly. He told me he had only posted it 45 minutes previously. Wow! That was quick.

I have been creating websites recently (some for me, some for friends) and I can tell you that it takes much longer to show up in Google’s search results. Google seems to love blogs, in part because the content is typically updated much more often than websites.

If I were starting out on the Internet these days, for exposure, passive income or sales and marketing, I would consider only having a blog as my main Internet presence.

P.S. This is an additional note I am writing about a week after this initial post. I posted something on one of my blogs and it showed up in a Google alert 10 minutes later! If you don’t have a blog, get one now.

Hi Bill O’Hanlon - I am using your full name in this comment, because I am curious if Google will pick it up and send you an alert. Does google monitor the comments in the blogs as well as the blog itself?

Uses for Google Alerts: When I first begin a blog, I create a google alert using several keywords from the blog’s topic. I have found this is a great way to keep my ideas “fresh” and to constantly give me new ideas for posts.

Perhaps it is time for the Web Whisperers to create a video tutorial on Google alerts. I’ll have one available by this coming friday, if not sooner.

cheers - Ryan Nagy
